How to Help Your Child Learn Better

Hellooo, everyone! It has been awhile, hasn’t it?!  School has been astonishingly busy, and writing newsletters was definitely off my to-do list for the past few weeks.  But when we got a short two-week break, I knew a newsletter was in order…

Here’s a little tip that you can use when you are reviewing with your child or trying to teach a whole mass of information:

less information at one time + more exposure (repetition) = better learning

And by the way, this applies to your learning too, not just to your child’s learning.  Instead of explanations, I shall just let you see it in action…

Here are some facts you might not know.  Read over them ONCE and try the question… and no looking back!

  • Singapore has the lowest infant mortality rate in the world.  This means that babies born here have a greater chance of survival than those born anywhere else in the world!
  • Singapore owns the world’s first night zoo (our Night Safari, of course!).
  • Singapore is the second most densely populated country in the world (the most densely populated is Monaco).
  • Singapore owns the world’s highest man-made waterfall.  It is located in Jurong Bird Park and stands at 30 metres high.
  • Singapore has more than 3,000 kilometres of roads.  If you connect them end to end, you can drive from Singapore to Hong Kong!
  • Singapore owns the world’s largest fountain.  It was built in 1997 and is located at Suntec City and cost around US$6 million.
  • Singapore exports more ornamental fish than any other country in the world (25% of the world market).

Okay, ready to try the question?  No looking back to double check, now!

QUESTION: Singapore has the world’s __?__, __?__, __?__ and __?__.

Can’t remember all four?  Ok nevermind.  Now, let’s try applying the formula.  Read the boxes over carefully and try to answer the question below.

1.

Singapore has the world’s…

  • lowest infant mortality rate
  • first night zoo
  • tallest man-made waterfall
  • largest fountain

2.

Singapore has the world’s

  • FEWEST infant deaths
  • FIRST night zoo
  • TALLEST man-made waterfall
  • LARGEST fountain

3.

The world’s

  • lowest infant mortality rates
  • first night zoo
  • tallest man-made waterfall
  • largest fountain

… can be found in SINGAPORE!

Now answer this question.

QUESTION: Singapore has the world’s __?__, __?__, __?__ and __?__.

Could you do it?  What was the difference?  This second time, I filtered out all the information you didn’t need to know, and put the facts in an easy-to-remember way.  Try to remember, when you work with children, they don’t have the background information you already have.  Because of that, they don’t need all the extra interesting facts!  The bare facts you’re giving them is already an information overload for them.

So I hope you take away this little tip with you:

less information + more exposure (repetition) = better learning

… And I also hope you go away with a deeper sense of appreciation for our nation now that you know what a great little place this is! ;)  Yeah, I couldn’t resist adding in this bit of my pet topic! I <3 Singapore!

Thank you for reading!

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of the National Library Board (NLB), we would like to invite you to pledge your blog to the Singapore Memory Project as part of efforts to collect memories that are already manifested in existing online channels.

By pledging your blog to SMP, you are affirming that every memory matters. Whether your posts are an account of your daily life, or an expression of your thoughts, the SMP hopes to find a home for your memories so that it can help build towards an understanding of Singapore. You will also receive a badge that you can display on your blog in recognition of your contributions.

Contributors to this blog pledging initiative will be listed on Singapore Memory portal’s blog pledging webpage. All blogs pledged to SMP will archived using NLB’s web harvesting software, in addition to images of each blog’s landing page.
